Digital Photography Classrooms

This site will help you become a better photographer, regardless of your experience level. If you're new to digital photography, you'll learn the basics of using the digital camera, computer and photo-software to create digital photographs you'll have fun taking and be proud to share. The information is presented in a clear, easy to understand way. For the more experienced digital photographer, there's advanced lessons on color and light, exposure and image processing.

But digital photography involves more than just learning how to operate a digital camera. The technical stuff is important, of course, but a web site about digital photography that only talks about digital cameras and camera hardware would be like a web site about oil painting that only talked about paint brushes.

Digital photography is art as well as science, and we do our best to attend to both. Whether you use the digital camera to record the important people and events of your life, use digital photos in your business or profession, or use this amazing medium to express yourself artistically, you want the photos you create to be both technically and esthetically great.

Think of Stone Bridge Photography's Digital Photography Resource Center as your "home base" for your exploration of all aspects of taking and sharing digital images. Here you'll find beginning and advanced lessons covering:

  • The Digital Camera
  • Computer Skills for the Digital Photographer
  • A Photo-editing Primer

Computer and editing lessons offer many on-screen video demonstrations which show you exactly how to perform important operations. Click here to see a sample.

This site is dedicated to learning. But learning seldom happens without interacting with others. So you are strongly encouraged to become an active participant here. You are invited to respond to blog entries and newsletters, express your views in the site's various forums by posting or responding to entries, and to share your photographic work in the galleries.

Be sure to bookmark this site, so you can return to it again and again.

Here's a partial list of the topics covered in the lessons:

  • Digital Camera Basics: Master the basic features common to most digital cameras
  • Auto Focus: Never miss another shot due to auto focus problems
  • Using Flash: When should you use flash and when should you NOT use flash
  • The Zoom Lens: Lean the difference between digital and optical zoom and why you should care
  • Camera Modes: Camera "Modes" explained
  • Transferring Images: Painlessly transfer, organize and store your photos on the PC
  • Printing: Discover how easy it is to print your own photos
  • Light and Color: Your photos will improve when you understand these raw materials
  • Basic Photo Editing: Cropping, sizing, correcting color and contrast
  • Panoramas: Combine multiple images to create sweeping panoramas
  • Sharing your photos: Share your photos using emails, slide shows and the internet.

Where to Begin?

If you've just purchased a new digital camera and need help understanding it's features and functions, start with Lesson 1 in the Camera course. Be sure to visit the "How to use this course" page for a quick guide to navigating. Warning: the first few lessons are very basic. Lessons become more detailed as you progress through the courses.

If you need help with transferring or organizing your photos using the computer, check out the Computer course. It's not as difficult as you may think.

The lessons on Photo-Editing are intended to show you how a typical photo-editing software package works, a basic understanding of the vocabulary involved, and demonstrate how to do the most common photo-editing tasks. This course will not make you an expert, but you'll discover whether or not it's something you'd like to pursue further and, if so, be better informed when choosing an editing software program.
